🏡 What’s Included in Your Relocation Allowance?

Congratulations! You've accepted a new role and are relocating for work. But what exactly is covered by a relocation allowance?
Many employees assume a relocation allowance only covers flights and moving costs. In reality, relocation benefits can be much broader, depending on your employer's policy.
A relocation allowance may include:
✅ Transportation and travel costs for you and your family
✅ Temporary accommodation while securing permanent housing
✅ Packing, removal, and storage costs
✅ School search assistance and certain education-related relocation expenses
✅ Settling-in assistance and other reasonable expenses directly linked to the relocation
In some organisations, there is no dedicated relocation policy. Instead, employees receive a lump-sum relocation allowance.
If you are offered a lump-sum relocation allowance, ask your employer upfront:
✅ Can the allowance be used at your discretion?
✅ Must you account for how it is spent?
✅ If you do not use the full amount, are you entitled to keep the balance, or must it be repaid?
Clarifying these issues before relocating can help avoid misunderstandings and disputes later. If you're unsure whether a particular expense is covered, ask before you incur it. Also, keep all invoices and receipts, as these may be required to support reimbursement claims or for tax and audit purposes.
A clear relocation policy benefits both employers and employees by setting expectations upfront and reducing the risk of disagreements later.
